GUILDS & ASSOCIATIONS
 Musicians Union: Represents over thirty thousand musicians working in all sectors of the music business. www.musiciansunion.org.uk
 British Phonographic Industry (BPI): The trade association representing the interests of the British recording industry since 1973. Its principle interest is to help its members combat the threat of music piracy, offer legal assistance, business support and advice on access to the international marketplace. www.bpi.co.uk
 The Music Publishers Association of the United States (MPA): The trade association representing the interests of the US music publishing industry, “fostering communication among publishers, dealers, music educators, and all ultimate users of music.” www.mpa.org
 National Music Publishers Association (NMPA): Currently representing over 800 American music publishers, the NMPA champions for the protection of music copyrights. www.nmpa.org
 Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI): A US performing rights organization. Representing more than 300,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers in all genres of music, and offering music licences. www.bmi.com
 American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers (ASCAP): An association of US composers, songwriters, lyricists, and music publishers of every kind of music. Through agreements with affiliated international societies, ASCAP also represents hundreds of thousands of music creators worldwide. ASCAP licenses music and distributes royalties for the non-dramatic public performances of members’ copyrighted works. www.ascap.com
 UK Music: An umbrella organisation representing the collective interests of the UK's commercial music industry, from artists, musicians, songwriters and composers, to major and independent record labels, managers, music publishers, studio producers and collecting societies. www.ukmusic.org

ROYALTY COLLECTION AGENCIES
 Mechanical Copyright Protection Society (MCPS): A service collecting and distributing ‘mechanical’ royalties generated from the recording of music onto many different formats and distributing the income to its members – writers/publishers of music. www.mcps.co.uk
 Performing Rights Society (PRS): Collects licence fees for the public performance and broadcast of musical works. Works in partnership with the MCPS as the MCPS-PRS Alliance. www.pamra.org.uk
 Phonographic Performance Ltd: The collecting society for record companies and performers, licencing radio and TV stations and other broadcasters who use sound recordings. Also licences clubs, shops and restaurants. www.ppluk.com
 SESAC: Music licensing agency representing songwriters and their publishers. www.sesac.com

 The Band Register: Want to make sure another band doesn’t snaffle your group’s long considered and nigh-on perfect name? Or that you don’t snaffle someone else’s? Then check these people. PLEASE NOTE: this service does not register the copyright of the name of your band, as names do not fall under copyright protection in law.
